Describe your role

Consultant anaesthetist with a specialist interest in obstetrics, head and neck anaesthesia, simulation, human factors and patient safety.

How did you get there?

My decision to be an anaesthetist was inspired by a brilliant anaesthetic registrar that I worked with when I was a medical trainee. Her unflappable approach to any emergency was enviable! Being an obstetric anaesthetist at St Mary’s, Manchester, is really rewarding, with its great multi-disciplinary team, variety of work and knowing that you can make a real difference for your patients. I started writing anaesthetic books as a trainee, encouraged by my then regional advisor. My combined interest in obstetric anaesthesia, human factors and the desire to make things safer and better has led to my work with HSIB.

What is your greatest achievement?

I received the Outstanding Achievement Award from St Mary’s Hospital for my support of the multi-disciplinary team. I was so pleased to receive this award; I was nominated for the award by my midwifery colleagues and it had never been awarded to an anaesthetist before.

What inspires you?

Seeing things change for the better inspires me. Working within a team who are motivated to facilitate change is key. Listening to those around you, your team and your patients, is really important to keep your enthusiasm alive. The unending support from my family also helps, that goes without saying!

What advice would you give (or resources you’d highlight) to those who wish to follow your path?

One of the most important things about working in anaesthesia is the team you work with. To know what your trainees and fellows need to learn, use the Educational Checklist. To get the best out of the people you work with, nurture a supportive and caring culture
